3 Tips to keep your team engage for maximum performance and results

A TEAM is required to achieve greater Success, Joy and Happiness. Without the right people, it will be virtually impossible to achieve a worthy goal. What’s a team? It’s a group of people UNITED as one to ACHIEVE a DEFINITE GOAL.

If you want to achieve success, joy and happiness, you must have a clear GOAL, a clear STRATEGY and an excellent TEAM to help you. Take you time to select the right members for your team. The members must be capable, available, reliable and dependable. Ultimately, you must develop MEANINGFUL, MEMORABLE and MUTUALLY beneficial RELATIONSHIP with each member of your team. This blog offers you 3 steps to keep your team engaged for maximum performance and results.

Step 1 is caring! Theodore Roosevelt once said, “No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.” I find this saying to be true in building a great team. I learned that caring for my team members is the best way to keep them engaged and perform at peak level.   Likewise, if you want results from your team, I encourage you to make the necessary effort to develop relationship and care for your team. In my latest book, HOW TO DEVELOP MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS, I offer 7 steps to develop healthy relationships.

When you show your team that you care, they’ll naturally care for you and your goals. It’s not enough to hire great people and place them in a great positions, but they need be cared for and valued as an important assert to your success. “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around” (Leo Buscaglia).

Step 2 is communicating! One of the jobs of a leader is to communicate his or her mission, vision and purpose (MVP) and goals to the team in a clear, concise and compelling way. Make it easier for your team to follow your lead by showing and telling your team what you aspect. “Of all of our inventions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language” (Walt Disney).

Step 3 is checking! This step will ensure that your expectations are met. I discovered that when I inspected the performance of my team members, performance level went up; and when I didn’t performance dropped. This is why I recommend inspection.

You may have heard this saying, “people do what’s inspected and not what’s expected.” Well, I found out about this principle the hard way. I expressed my expectations to my previous team, but I never inspected their performance until it was too late. By the time I discovered the importance of checking out and inspecting the work of my team, I lost way too much money and time.   I’m now a big believer of President Ronald Reagan’s concept “trust but verify.”

As a leader, I would recommend that you hire a manager to inspect the performance of the team and ask for regular reports to verify progress. I found that setup an “automatic inspection” using management software to be the most effective.

The goal of  checking out your team work is to monitor progress, reward desirable results and eliminate unproductivity.  A regular inspection is not to focus on what is wrong only; it’s also an opportunity to mentor and to build your team up to perform at the optimal level. It’s to empower and help them achieve their goals and praise their achievements with great rewards.

I want to conclude this blog with the following leadership quotes:

  • Effective leadership is putting first things first. Effective management is discipline, carrying it out” (Stephen Covey).
  • Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things” (Peter Drucker).
  • Teamwork makes the dream work, but a vision becomes a nightmare when the leader has a big dream and a bad team” (John C. Maxwell).
