3 Ways to Tell if you Have an Addiction

It was once thought that if you had to wonder if you were addicted to something, you probably were. We now know that it is not that easy to determine if a person has a true, “clinical” addiction to a particular substance or behavior. But we do know there are definite signs that can lead you to help if you need to seek guidance for your addiction, or whatever is hindering you from success.

From our previous posts on addiction, we know that an addiction actually changes the way our brain functions, and the addict may not even know he or she is addicted, or feels no control over the addiction.

Do you know someone with an addiction, but unaware of it? If so, you’re not alone. Here’s an example from one of my clients:

“I didn’t know I had a drinking problem, or that alcohol had even become that important in my life. I come home from work, have a few drinks to relax, just like my dad always did. I’d have some beers on the weekend–of course more than I was willing to acknowledge—but never realized my need for alcohol had consumed me until I attended an out-of-state business conference. I went to find a liquor store, only to discover that the conference was in a “dry” county; no alcohol sold! Before I could even realize it, I was driving my rental car more than an hour and a half away to a different count that sold alcohol. My relief should have been a hint. But when I was severely reprimanded for missing an important meeting at the conference due to my “beer run,” I decided I may need help with an addiction.”

3 Signs that you may have an addiction

1. You have lied to people about your use of the substance or extent of your behavior.

2. You have withdrawal symptoms when you don’t have the substance or engage in the behavior.

3. You use more of the substance or engage in the behavior more than in the past.

Recovery Is Possible!

There are many factors that contribute to addiction and dependency. Addiction affects all types of people. We now know that it’s not the stereotype “back alley drunk or junkie” who is not immune from addiction…of any kind.

Your work associates, friends, executives…anyone can be lured by the temptations that lead to addiction. But recovery IS possible…with the right MINDSET, strategy and support!
