7 Steps to Healthy Relationships-Step 6-Developing Trust

Trust“Trust men and they will be true to you; treat them greatly and they will show themselves great” (Emerson).

Do you find it difficult to trust? If so, you are not alone. There are many people who face this challenge every day. Sometimes, we do not even know why it is difficult to trust. We were all created with the basic ability to trust.  However, the negative experiences in life and our reactions to them hindered our ability to trust.

What is trust? Trust is both an emotional and a rational act. Emotionally, it is where we expose our vulnerabilities openly to people and believe they will not take advantage of our honesty. Rationally, it is where we have calculated the probabilities of gain and loss based on previous experiences and data that leads to the conclusion that the person in question will behave appropriately.

Trust is essential for building meaningful relationships. Without this foundation, no relationship can really stand. Trust is to a relationship as oxygen is to the body. All meaningful relationships must be based on mutual trust in order to grow and thrive.
