Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication

effective-communication-cycleIn counseling school I discovered the concepts of verbal and nonverbal communication. Verbal communication refers to our spoken words that express our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. This excludes written expressions. Whereas, nonverbal communication refers to gestures, facial expressions and any body language that does not involve written or verbal communication. This process includes any body posture, accent, tone of voice and eye contact.
Nonverbal communication actually speaks louder than verbal communication. I believe that effective communication is 80 percent nonverbal and only 20 percent verbal. As so insightfully stated by Jim Rohn, “Effective communication is 20 percent what you know, and 80 percent how you feel about what you know.

When you are engaged in communication with people, it’s critical to pay attention to your verbal and nonverbal clues, since both forms of communication will impact your message.
